AdventureCORPS Presents 2010 Death Valley Century and Double Century - Fall Edition

Rain came down in Mother Nature's Greatest Sports Arena on the start line of the final AdventureCORPS event of 2010, the Fall Death Valley Century and Double Century on October 30. But, it being Death Valley, "it wa s dry rain" and so, as the riders set out for their Final 2010 AdventureCORPS Experience, the roads were dry and a bright new day of cycling beckoned. As it turned out, it was a perfect day for all the riders, with challenges and rewards for everyone "out there."

There were 165 century riders and 150 double century riders, a record-sized field! Our hats are off to everyone who rode, as well as to the voluneers. In particular, we want to recognize Mark Martinez, who completed his 50th double century, thus earning California Triple Crown Hall of Fame membership! Kudos also to Adobo Velo, who had three century riders, 12 double century riders, and three volunteers in action out there! Kudos, too, to the eight fixed gear riders, six of whom rode the double century together.

Special congratulations are also extended to Hannah Swan, age 14, her sister Moriah Swan, age 11, and their father, Richard Swan, for their strong performance at the event. Both Moriah and Hannah took first place in USA Cycling State Championship events this year in their respective age divisions and Moriah medaled at the National Championships held in Bend, OR. They also rode the entire 103-mile AdventureCORPS Mount Laguna Bicycle Classic in April. This next year they will be joined by their two sisters, Rachel and Sarah, and the four of them will be racing on a new team called Strive Racing. The sense of camaraderie and team spirit this weekend was truly exemplary. Way to go, everyone! Certainly everybody had an adventure and it was a pleasure to spend a long day "out there" with you! Thanks for riding and thanks for supporting this event!

Thank you for blessing my family with such an awesome weekend. Wow! What a stunning venue for the perfect cycling event. The route was simple, the surrounding landscape was spectacular, and the majority of the roads contained the smoothest asphalt we have ever ridden on with virtually no traffic. That said, it was the flawless, efficient execution and the encouraging, friendly demeanor of the AdventureCorps staff that made this event so incredible. Thanks for another great day of cycling on Saturday. The morning showers and your ascerbic wit were a great start to a unique day. I've never done that route before, and was fooled a bit by the winds. The tailwind in the morning up the gradual Scotty's climb was great, but going back down the gradual descent into a headwind was more work than I was expecting. Just got home to lovely warm moist Florida,I am taking a moment to thank you and your staff. I had a most enjoyable =ride on saturday. The drizzle, hills and wind made the ride tough, but, as you were saying prior to the start it would make the memories last longer and be better. I have been on many rides and this was very well organized and well done. I had not planned to journey out there again after missing out for several years, but, I will try it again in a year or two. Once again, thank you for producing another ideal event for all of us to "weigh & measure" ourselves in this "spiritual journey". Despite crashing a dozen miles from the finish and DNFing, the experience probably was more valuable to me more so than the other doubles I've "suceeded" at. One week later, and I'm physically back to normal. Unfortunately, my carbon fibre stead had to be put to rest. Well, looks like I get another new bike in January so I can come back and redeem myself in Death Valley. Take care out there, and see you next year. - Jay Nielsen
